Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan’s Negotiation About The Grand Renaissance Dam Feud

On the press release held on November 06, 2019 Mr  Gedu Andargachew and Dr Sileshi Bekele briefly explained the procedures of the recent discuss with the government of Egypt and Sudan regarding the Ethiopian grand renaissance dam based on the Nile river hosted by USA. President Donald Trump, Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin and world bank president David Malpass mediated this talk.

It is known that the construction of the Grand Renaissance Dam (GERD) has commenced back in 2011. Since then several disputes have been arising between the two countries. Even though similar negotiations have been started, they were all held up too land and were not fruitful.

The meeting was conducted in the presence of Ethiopian, Egyptian and Sudanese officials and aimed to speed up the previously begun discussions.

The Ethiopian representatives explained recent activities on the dam, the remarkable benefits of the dam to Ethiopian and neighboring countries as well.  This presentation, Mr Gedu believes, has helped clear up the distorted perceptions people have about the dam.

All three countries have agreed to positively pursue these discussions; and , Ethiopia made clear that the negotiation should proceed in a manner that guarantees Ethiopia to benefit from the initial aims of the dam and the other nations to also profit from it.

After the Novemeber 6th’s talk, 4 consecutive meetings are supposed to be held beginning from November 15, 2019. In Parallel, 4 technical negotiations will be held.

After these series of discussions, if an agreement has not been reached, a solution will be drawn based on the declaration of principle all three countries have previously agreed upon.

The main message Ethiopia wanted to deliver was that the intentions of the construction of the dam is not to harm anyone but rather to enhance the development of Ethiopia and combat poverty while still offering benefits to neighboring countries. Having said this, Mr Gedu invited their colleagues to explain remaining issues

Dr Sileshi Bekele, who was also an Ethiopian representative for this discussion,  talked about the positive reception and discussion of all involved parties including the president of United States of America.

Dr Sileshi also explained the need for 4 discussions. The number was decided based upon the recommendation of independent mediators and scientist. The united states government and the world bank will attend all these negotiations as an observer.

  1. What happened after the 4th meeting? It was a yeat ago, and should be updated. Even with the Pandemic, Ethiopians need water for both household and farms.

  2. I have been surfing on-line more than 3 hours lately, yet I by no means discovered any attention-grabbing article like yours. It¦s beautiful worth enough for me. In my opinion, if all webmasters and bloggers made just right content material as you did, the internet will likely be a lot more helpful than ever before.
