Sidama, which was declared an independent region only recently, is being torn apart because of power struggles from its leading politicians. Former Sidama zone administration Ato Desta Ledemo, the region’s former governor Ato Million Mattewos, Sidama zone administrator Ato Kerre Chawecha and current regional governor Ato Desse Dalke are at the forefront of the squabble for the presidency of the newly formed region. Ato Desta is leading this competition not only because he has got the media to side with him, but also has the region’s wealthy individuals on his side as well. ato Kerre had worked hard for the presidency, however, his efforts remain fruitless as Ato Desse is in the lead.
Another politician, Ato Alemayew Guje, who had served in the former PM HaileMariam Desalegn’s administration, is said to be involved in the race for the presidency in the region. Ato Alemayew, known for his corrupt ways, had been jailed and pardoned by the new federal administration. He resided in the USA until he heard of Sidama’s promotion from zone to region and now has returned to the region’s capital Hawassa to gain political power.
All the candidates are remembered for their bad ethics and corruption and are deemed unfit to lead the proud people of Sidama who have now started to realize that the need for the zone’s promotion to region did not arise from the politicians urge to serve their people but from their personal greed for the federal budget. It is known that through 28 years there have been 6 leaders of SNNP regional administration, 5 of which were from the Sidama zone. This goes to show that the politicians are trying to tear the SNNP, comprised of over 50 ethnicities, apart.
